The MoMA Design Store is launching a playful pop-up shop that reimagines everyday food as design-forward objects for the home. The faux-food-themed pop-up, called MoMA Mart, will be open January 6 through March 29 at both MoMA Design Store locations—SoHo (81 Spring Street) and Midtown (44 West 53rd Street)—and will also be featured online, where people will be able to shop for the various items. As with all MoMA Design Store purchases, proceeds support the museum and its programming. The pop-up draws inspiration from food’s long-standing role in art and design, featuring items that resemble familiar kitchen staples and then reveal themselves as lamps, clocks, candles, stools and sculptural décor. The concept is influenced by works in The Museum of Modern Art’s collection, including pieces by artists Claes Oldenburg and Ed Ruscha. The MoMA Mart assortment includes a tomato-shaped table lamp, beeswax candles, food-inspired vases, sandwich- and pizza-themed clocks, sculptural stools and salt-and-pepper shakers, and much more, museum store administrators said.
